 celtic football club statement
IT is with great sadness that Celtic Football Club today announced that Scott Brown's sister Fiona (21) has passed away after a long battle against cancer. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic are with Scott and his family at this difficult time. Clearly, Scott and his family will be receiving every support from Celtic Football Club. This is an extremely difficult time for the entire family and naturally, we would ask that the family's privacy is respected. There will be no further comment from Scott or his family on this matter and they have asked not to be contacted. Under the Press Complaints Commission Code of Practice, the need to respect an individual's privacy with regards to intrusion into grief or shock is clearly stated and we trust that this will be observed in relation to Scott and the family. We thank the press and media in advance for observing this request.

 CHAMPIONIES
Emotions threatened to overcome the Celtic family at times over the past week, when we saw our high point and lowest ebb within days. Our grief at the loss of a favourite son was only matched by our joy in clinching three in a row against all odds. Gordon Strachan has been criticised at times for team selection and tactics. He is entitled to flash two fingers at those critics and remind them that he ranks along side Maley and Stein seeing off three consecutive Rangers managers in the process. His achievement at home and in Europe entitle him to complete support from the stands and further financial backing from the board. Marks out of 10, 9.5, nobody’s perfect but he’s working on it. There are a number of contenders for MVP, McGeadyfor his thrilling wing play, reminiscent of Jinky, Caldwell for refusing to buckle under early season mistakes, playing out of position and Artur for sheer class and entertainment. However the award must go to Scott McDonald who provided the statistics that matter most, 31 scored. Enjoy the summer Skippy and come back ready to do it all again. The guaranteed income from the Champions League should mean more money available to strengthen the team. Areas needing looked at are, left back where Lee Naylor has struggled with no obvious replacement, a pacey front man to exploit Nakas passing and despite the best defensive record in the league, a dominant centre back who can pass a ball. I do expect to see Scott Brown settle down in a central role next season with renewed confidence, possibly alongside Robson who has had a wonderful start to his Celtic career and hope Donati can recapture his early season form. Perhaps we wont need to spend too much in the summer with the likes of Ben Hutchinson, Koki Mizuno, Cillian Sheridan, Simon Ferry,Scott Cuthbert and more of Tommy Burns protégés waiting in the wings. Maybe we’ll blow the budget on one super signing, Lionel Messi anyone? There are sure to be a number of players leaving in the close season, Steven Pressley, Bobo, Derek Riordan ? If so we wish them well. Finally, to the 2nd best, won more, lost fewer, goal difference better, points total superior, what do points make? Thanks for the chase, its going to be 4 in a row. farewell to tommy burns
From Celtic.net TENS of thousands of Celtic supporters lined the streets of Glasgow’s East End to bid their emotional, final farewells to Tommy Burns on Tuesday afternoon. There was a sea of green and white outside St Mary’s Church, Abercromby Street, as thousands of mourners gathered to pay their respects to a true gentleman and Celtic legend. A native of the Calton, Tommy held St Mary’s very close to his heart. Fittingly, St Mary’s church hall was the birthplace of Celtic Football Club back in 1887. Just yards from the front door of the church, a massive banner, bearing a defining image of Tommy from his playing days, had been pinned up. It read: ‘Tommy Burns – St Mary’s Favourite Son’. Tommy’s former Celtic team-mates, Pat Bonner, Peter Grant, Danny McGrain and George McCluskey acted as Pallbearers, along with Rangers managerial duo Walter Smith and Ally McCoist, who were both close friends of Tommy. They were joined inside the church by Tommy’s wife Rosemary, mum Margaret, his children and grandchild. Also present were other members of his family, friends and players and directors from his beloved Celtic. Colleagues and friends from Celtic and football clubs all around the world also paid their respects, along with politicians and leading figures from the world of sport. The Requiem Mass was celebrated by the Right Rev. Joseph Devine, Bishop of Motherwell, who was joined by priests from all over Scotland. Monsignor Thomas Monaghan, Tommy's parish priest, delivered the homily. Billy Stark, Tommy’s close friend and assistant manager at Celtic, offered a touching, heartfelt eulogy, during which he spoke of the three main loves in Tommy’s life – family, faith and football. Following the Requiem Mass, supporters lined the streets all the way from the Calton to Celtic Park, where tens of thousands had gathered to watch the funeral cortege pass by the stadium's Main Stand and pay their respects. After that last, poignant visit to Celtic Park, the cortege continued to Linn Cemetery – Tommy Burns’ final resting place.

 funeral broadcast at celtic park
RIP The audio from Tommy Burns' funeral on Tuesday, May 20 will be broadcast live back to the outside of Celtic Park and will be heard on giant speakers around the car park and outside the main entrance. The space limitations of St Mary's Church in the Calton are such that very few Celtic supporters will be able to hear the Requiem Mass. The decision to broadcast the sound from the service back to the ground means that more people will be able to participate. And those supporters and friends can be in place when the funeral cortege returns to the park between the church and Linn Cemetery at around 1.45pm on Tuesday. The Requiem Mass for Tommy begins at 12noon. Please note this will be audio only outside the stadium - there will be no live pictures.

 Tommy Burns RIP
1956-2008 It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Tommy Burns, the term legend is used to freely in modern society, but in the case of Tommy he truly was a "Celtic Legend",he was a great friend to the Association and while he was Manager of ourGreat Club he attended every Monthly Meeting,he will be sadly missed throughout the Football World and indeed in Society as a Whole. Our sincere Condolences go to Rosemary and all Tommy's extended Family, they will be in our thoughts and Prayers at this very sad time. May God Bless Tommy Burns, and May He Rest In Peace,He Truly Will Never Walk Alone. Due to unforeseen circumstances the Rosary has been cancelledTribute by Tommy Dornan PRO CSA Tommy Burns - Legend (a fairy story, a fable) What is a legend and how does someone achieve legendary status? A fairy tale, of great deeds and mighty wizards, of knights in shining armour defeating wicked spells and slaying dragons ? The term has often been used to describe many less than worthy candidates. Those who can be deemed legendary in their own imagination, famous for their own notoriety, in tales of outrageous exploits fuelled by drink or boastful self praise! Occasionally, once in a generation perhaps, a beacon will shine, marked by a quiet demeanour, a strong sense of right and fair play and a burning desire to succeed. When such a man is found he is to be cherished for we will seldom see his like again. Of humble origins and proud traditions, from within a stones throw of Celtic Park, came such a Bhoy. He played for St Mary’s boys Club, the parish that gave birth to our beloved Celtic. In 1973 he began his walk among the giants when Jock Stein signed him and he began learning his trade. He earned his spurs in 500 games where his mop of red hair was forever in the thick of things scoring 81goals. Big Jock once said of him“doesn’t he have class, his left foot makes the ball talk” praise indeed from the master. In the Happy Birthday year of 88 he twisted and turned to bring the double home, including one trademark free kick which deceived big Butcher into conceding an own goal. However all good things come to an end and so Tommy, in tears, threw the tools of his trade into the Jungle and left for Kilmarnock, where he achieved his first managerial success. He returned home in 1994 and created a team in his image, the Glasgow Celtic Way, with flair and pace they entertained us and we were desperately unlucky not to win back the title. Di Canio, Van Hooijdonk, Cadette ably backed by Peter Grant and Phil O’Donnell, epitomised Tommy’s style and belief in real football. A team many would contend played the best football we’ve seen since the Lions. With only the Scottish Cup success of 95 to show for his effort and grumbling behind the scenes from Fergus, Tommy was all too soon, off to pastures new to continue his football education. His parting words and perhaps the beginning of his legacy to us, “football academies are about people, not bricks and mortar.”Like a wandering minstrel of old, he packed his bags and was off to Newcastle and Reading before making the journey home to pass on his acquired wisdom to the young bhoys. His flame red hair, now turning silvery grey, perhaps due to the weight of our expectations, lent him a scholarly, sage like appearance yet he still cavorted around the training field like a two year old. Working away in the backroom, he again travelled the length and breadth of the country, securing the right people for his academy and imparting his wisdom to strengthen our future. He played his part on our road trip to Seville and like us, wept with pride in the achievements of Martins’ team.In 2006 fate through another challenge in his way and he met it like before, head on. With Rosemary and their family beside him and the Celtic family surrounding him in prayer,we believed the battle had been won. Sadly it was not to be and on Thursday morning he again walked through the gates of Paradise. So what is a legend, a stirring tale, a fairy story, yes indeed, for he is now part of our folklore and many tales will be told of his deeds through the ages.In future if you are asked to explain what it means to be “Celtic-minded” the answer will Come easy, TOMMY BURNS. Tommy Burns Honorary President CSA. With Francie Hinton former President at the Celtic Supporters Association Rally 17 Feb 2008 The route for Tommy Burns’ funeral cortege has been announced. The funeral party will leave St Mary’s Church, Abercromby Street, Calton, on Tuesday, May 20 at approximately 1:45pm to pass the front of Celtic Park before heading to Linn Cemetery.
